Architecture in Formation, PC, is a youthful, progressive design firm located in the Chelsea Arts District of New York City. Founded by Matthew Bremer, AIA, the practice engages itself in a wide range of design projects at a variety of scales. Each project, while unique in scope, scale, and locale is approached with consistent level of rigorous and sensitive investigation. Understanding the appropriate relationships between a work and its expanded physical and cultural context, and developing design integrity through rigorous and appropriate details are key ingredients to the spirited inventiveness toward problem-solving that has emerged. Essential to the work, is the shared belief among the team of 4-6 people that design integrity is rooted in a creative, analytical process. The name “Architecture in Formation” itself suggests the belief in the primacy of “making” within the larger professional process. While strong conceptual convictions belie each project, the work is not overly theoretical. With a good amount of built work emerging - conceptually-rigorous, well-crafted, “intelligent” buildings, spaces, and developments characterize the work of AiF . The office is currently involved in several projects that are helping to expand its understanding beyond the realm of conventional architecture practice. These ventures include aspects of marketing strategy, identity/branding, product and real estate development, licensing, and communication design. The apparent dialectical relationship between the more custom and tailored New York work, and the more budget-driven and “speculative” work in Texas continues to inform each toward mutually beneficial ends. Certainly, the process of architecture is an ambitious, if not audacious, undertaking. Creating spaces that function effortlessly, are formally resolved, and are built “water-tight” requires the dedicated collaboration amongst numerous parties and the overriding vision of those committed to the Formation of Architecture.
